HGI Industries of Boyton Beach, Fl presented a new air purification technology that uses UV light and ambient moisture to create long living hydroxyls to clean the air of all off gases, bacteria and viruses. They have used this type of machine to safely remove some of the toughest smells & bacteria’s in other applications such as sewage treatment facilities, rendering plants, treatment of mold and smoke damage etc. The goal was to set up a test at the hog barn to see if the technology could effectively eliminate the ammonia and H2S gases and to observe the effects it would have on the animals.
The test took place at the Hermitage breeding facility in Columbus NB in one bay of 400 pigs. Prior to the Odorox machine being installed the pigs were pale in color, had distended veins in their head and runny noses. The animals were skittish, hyperactive in nature and aggressive. Their intake of food and water was below normal and the air in the barn was quite foggy due to the ammonia and H2S gases. Normally, there were fatalities in the barn on a regular basis.
A 12 lamp Odorox unit was mounted outside the room and vented into the sub floor. The machine was plugged into a 120V power source and turned on and let run, after 4-6 hours the air started to clear.
The air was much cleaner and the pigs were noticeably more playful, relaxed, many were laying down. Their skin tone was pinkish and the distended veins were noticeably reduced. They were eating and drinking more regularly and were less skittish in the presence of people. There were no fatalities once the units were running.
In an effort to see how the treated air would affect a weak, small, sick pig from one of the other barns who was expected to die he was brought into the barn and identified with a red mark on the back. Within a short period of time it started feeding and when pushed out by larger pigs, continued to fight for space at the trough and continued to eat and improve in health.

“The result of the Odorox machine’s ability to clean the air in the barn was dramatic. Even more dramatic was the visible change in the behavior and the health of the pigs, in a very short amount of time. It is our plan to have machines installed in our barns as we believe it will enhance the health of our product and improve the bottom line of our business.”
